What is a dental implant?
Dental implants basically involves three parts
-
A titanium screw, also called as anchor, is surgically positioned in the bone tissue of the jaw line, where the vacant space is created by the missing tooth.
-
A cylindrical titanium abutment is screwed on to the implant. This part acts as the connecting device between anchor and prosthetic device.
-
Restoration crown or dentures made out of porcelain is fused or attached with abutment to give natural teeth appearance.
How is the dental implant procedure performed?
Before we begin explaining the procedures involved, it is essential to know that dental implant procedure spans around several months and involves two oral surgeries. But you need not panic. -
After numbing the area with anesthesia, the gum tissues are surgically cut and the flaps are opened to expose the underlying bone. Dental surgeon subsequently drills the exposed bone and inserts the anchor onto it, before reflapping and suturing the gum tissue.
-
Once the jaw line gets healed after couple of months, the gum tissues are again surgically opened to screw the abutment with the anchor. The gum tissues are realigned to facilitate protrusion of abutment and sutured. Also a healing cap is provided to safe guard the gum tissue and to help quicker healing.
-
As the final part of the treatment, the crowns or dentures are fixed to the protruding abutments.
Am I a candidate?
Most people qualify for the procedure, provided they meet the following criteria:
-
Have healthy gums and sufficient jaw bones to provide good support. Alternatively people with insufficient bone strength may have to undergo bone grafting surgery prior to dental implants.
-
-
As smoking may cause damage to the root, it is not recommended.
